The Cape Breton Western Riders was established in 1973 to promote riding
in the area. At this time most activities were based at stables and most
shows were held off-island. The Club was formed from a large group in
attendance at a meeting called by Ken MacKenzie. Tom Burt was elected
as the first President. A show schedule was established, and shows were
sponsored by clubs in different areas, such as: Margaree, L'Ardoise, Mira, North
Sydney and Antigonish. Over the years, surrounding clubs dissolved and the

CBWR took over responsibility of sponsoring the shows. The shows
were held outdoors until the construction of the indoor arena. The Cape
Breton Western Riders Association has been able to offer a large variety
of classes to the local horse community. The CBWR is a versatile
organization that offers English and Western pleasure, driving, gymkhana
and most recently we have added miniature horse classes. CBWR offers age
division classes including Smallfry, 13 & Under, 14-18 and Senior, as
well as classes for ponies and horses. And now 38
years later, CBWR continues the tradition of promoting horsemanship for
the local horse community.
